Berufs- und Weiterbildungszentrum Toggenburg

Show project on map

The Toggenburg Vocational and Education Centre (BWZ) in Wattwil is undergoing extensive renovation and expansion. The aim of the urban planning concept is to create a compact entrance area leading to Bahnhofstrasse and to connect the two campus areas. An additional base building structures the access area clearly and establishes an open foyer zone that enhances transparency and orientation.

The architectural expansion includes a western base extension with a new sports hall and an eastern extension featuring a spacious, open learning environment. The learning spaces extend over four storeys, incorporating double-height sections with views of the KSW campus. A tiered spatial organisation and a transparent design of the circulation core create a modern and functional learning environment.

In terms of outdoor space, a natural riverside setting with diverse recreational and retreat areas is being developed. The rainwater management system follows a cascading principle, allowing water to seep, evaporate, or be used for irrigation efficiently. Existing trees are preserved and supplemented with regional, climate-resistant plantings. Traffic surfaces are kept to a minimum, and bicycle parking is located near the entrance area.

Structurally, the expansion is based on recycled concrete and timber frame construction, emphasising the project’s sustainability. The new building’s facade will be clad with structured aluminium panels and seamlessly integrated into the existing structure. An external, spiral emergency staircase made of smooth aluminium provides a striking architectural accent. The project aims to create a forward-looking, sustainable, and functional educational environment.
