The new building of the Federal Department DETEC spatially connects the central square between buildings M2 to M6. The new office building is divided into two units grouped around two courtyards of different sizes. The large courtyard of the 1st phase will be extended into a single-storey atrium for the restaurant, while the smaller courtyard will remain an outdoor space which will serve as a terrace for the foyer and the bar. Spatially and programmatically, the ‚Mittelbau‘ will be developed into the centre, to which two office wings will be connected. The collective rooms are grouped between the two courtyards: the meeting rooms, the small meeting rooms and the archive are arranged around two-storey lobby rooms and offer an informal way through the building with several spiral staircases.
The new building is proposed as a concrete-wood construction: the basement as well as the four cores are made of recycled concrete. All other ceilings will be wood composite ceilings. Solid wooden columns, primary beams and secondary beams made of wood form a characteristic system of beams, which are not clad and thus become the new identity of the interiors.
