Located in the Bremen city centre, the waterfront has been challenged with flooding issues. Topotek 1’s design works with the issue of introducing basic engineered structures into the urban fabric, while adding additional uses that serve the public directly. Thus, the project features raised sculptural dike walls that guarantee flood protection and act as an attractive public free space available for urban activities at the same time.
The design – while thriving in the artificiality of materials – follows the natural tectonic dynamic of the river and introduces green spaces on the riverbanks, paying a tribute to the once wild water. In the meantime, the project reflects on the juxtaposition of clashing urban and natural spaces and provides a smooth flowing connection between the city and the river.
