The impressive stronghold, overlooking both the Rhine and Mosel rivers is an important national monument. In a complete restructuring of the northern approach as a visitor’s facility, the historical plateau is developed as a museum park and the spatial qualities of the site brought into context with the wider surrounding.
The design concept reorganizes the historic fortress plateau in a spacial and dramaturgic way into the new main entrance of the fortress. the car entrance and parking lot are placed at the edge of the plateau. Through this, the big space keeps it’s monumentality and stages the silhouette of the fortress to the north. On top of the former barck design construction, a wide grass field is laid out which forms the background for the experience of the fortress ensemble. A new network of path axes orders the plain and is connected with the existing system of pathways.
