The new urban development “Neues Ufer” in Berlin harmoniously blends landscape, community, and ecological value. The site’s design is based on a fluid assemblage of green and constructed “islands,” arranged across gentle hillscapes to establish space for play, relaxation, and activity.
The “archipelago” is structured in reference to the surrounding buildings while its shape enables tree planting even in areas with underground structures thanks to a subtly modeled topography.
Carefully placed amenities, including benches, play equipment, and fitness stations, support a wide range of activities throughout the site. Play areas range from protected sand zones to public playgrounds, while climbing elements, slides, nets, and games like table tennis and chess engage users of all ages.
Each play area is characterized by a specific tree species planted in monospecific groups atop gentle mounds. Along the edge of the quarter large-canopy trees are placed freely throughout the landscape to reinforce the park-like atmosphere.
