Drawing on the historical development of Ludwigstraße, the concept for its redesign creates a distinctive landscape composition that combines the genius loci of the site with a contemporary and ecologically sustainable design of urban open space. Inspired by the tradition of the English landscape garden, a scenographic sequence of plants accompanies the buildings along Ludwigstraße, resonating with the architectural ensemble and shaping the streetscape as a coherent and contemporary urban space.
The groups of trees, varying in size and density, are arranged situationally along the streetscape in relation to the architecture of Ludwigstraße and are accompanied by a diverse ground cover of perennials, grasses, and shrubs whose vertical development gradually intensifies from south to north: from low-growing planted areas around Odeonsplatz and in front of the Feldherrnhalle to progressively taller vegetation unfolding in stages towards the north. Despite the richness and variety of the planting palette, the vegetation along the length of the street coalesces into a coherent landscape composition.
Context-specific design principles allow for the gradual refinement of the situational arrangements of trees and groundcover throughout the realization process, enabling an inherent flexibility and adaptability within the design. In this way, the concept can be selectively adjusted in specific areas of the site — individual planted spaces may be modified or supplemented without compromising the overarching design idea.
Through a forward-looking strategy for climate adaptation within the streetscape — integrating ecological potential, contemporary water management, and high-quality amenities for cycling, strolling, and lingering alike — the concept anchors Ludwigstraße firmly in the present while preserving its historic character and effectiveness of as an established urban space.
